A Rant

Dear Diary,

Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.
Neil Postman
The Disappearance of Childhood

One wonders why some people have children?  A fashion accessory perhaps?

Read this article in the Telegraph - child abuse I call it.

On top of this David Cameron thinks parents (from an underclass in society only?) need to be taught parenting skills (this comes from someone who has always had a nanny for his own children and who, along with his wife, leaves his eight year old in a pub toilet and goes home without her).

This farming out of children is a time bomb waiting to go off because these children will be affected psychologically. We should be aiming for a society where one parent is able to stay at home for a few years (and that is all it is out of one's life) and give children the proper care they deserve.

Rant over,

Cait

I will never understand why people have children, put them in daycare and only see them an hour or two a day, then wonder why their children have so many problems.

I heard a debate about this on the radio this morning, and although it seems to be an unfashionable view I do agree with you. Why on earth bother to have children if you can't look after them yourself?

Something has to give, and for me it was a career for a few years but I don't regret it for a second.

I agree with you completely Cait.
I have championed this cause so often, and feel as strongly as you about it.

Cait, in my decades of adulthood, I have had neither children nor pets, feeling that since I needed to work long hours, it would not be possible to give the love I would want to give to children or pets. Perhaps the addition of a husband somewhere along the decades might have make this all easier.

Maybe not.

Bravo to Molly for her post.

I have a new post up that includes a photo of a window with no view surrounded by a brick wall. It was your Sean Scully header that motivated me to take that photo.

This afternoon, heading to a crosstown bus stop after a wonderful visit to the glories of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, I popped into the Irish Historic Society's glorious Fifth Avenue building to see an exhibit of six contemporary Irish painters. Did I make a note of any of the talented artists' names. I did not. Guilty. Next time I am over on that part of town, I will try to remember.

I'm there with you. I know some have to work just to put food on the table and pay the bills, but there are far too many who can afford one parent to stay home, but choose things over time with children. I never worked, and though we don't have much money, those years with my kids are more precious to me than anything. Kids can have problems no matter what the care situation is, but for me, I wanted to be there with them day after day, year after year.

I'm reading backwards through your posts here - and will just say 'Amen' again!
