Just a pic of my rudbeckia and a sweet butterfly to remind me of late summer
Now we are a week in to November
Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off--then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.”
Herman Melville
(Best known for his novels of the sea, especially Moby Dick).

His quotation made me smile.
I loved the image of 'knocking people's hats off' and fully understood that feeling (sometimes!) and share the calling of the sea.
Talking of the sea, I have discovered a wonderful artist, Robert Kelsey.
'Robert Kelsey has developed a creative reputation from his faithful depictions of the coastal landscapes of Western Scotland and its adjacent islands. Well travelled, Kelsey also often paints such disparate locations as the Mediterranean, Suffolk and Cornwall. One cannot mention Kelsey’s artistic skill without observing his dedication to the form of light and colour, to which he brings an unparalleled accuracy.'
And I would like to post one of his pictures which, for me, may satisfy today's 'callings of the sea'.
It's that dream house again.................
Isle of Coll
PS I have also blogged a wee pic here today; do call by if you've time.
I wonder, Cait, how many of us feel the 'callings of the sea'... and why is that? I too have had experiences where the water 'calmed' me and helped me put my priorities in order.
ReplyDeleteIn my minds' eye, I live on a cliff overlooking the sea...(altho I know that this will never happen - *unless* it happened in some former life)
A beautiful post. Love the Melville quote and can also relate ... thank you for the introduction to this artist. Ah, the sea ... :)
ReplyDeleteI love the picture of the dream house! I want to live there.
ReplyDeleteIt is a wild call - the call of the sea - have you read the Masefield poem?
LOVE that painting. I also get the urge to go to the sea. We went last week, to Durdle Dor, on the stormiest of days.
ReplyDeleteFantastic quote! It very nearly describes me to a t. = D
ReplyDeleteI don't head for the sea, though. I put myself in a time-out. Perhaps I should head for the sea; perhaps it would healing. Yes, the rolling waves might feel as comforting as a rocking chair. The sound equally comforting and the smell a great aromatherapy. Okay, you've talked me into it.
